Voting: A Fundamental Right
This presentation will focus on the most pressing issues connected to voter suppression and disenfranchisement in the 2020 election cycle. We will explore the Constitutional status of voting as a “fundamental right,” as well as the legislative status of the Voting Rights Act. Several key US Supreme Court cases will be examined, including Bush v. Gore and Citizens United. Finally, we will consider the risks presented by electronic voting machines, electronic vote counting, and mail-in voting, as well as political districting and political party structures. In the end, we will see that voting is only one key element of struggling for social justice.
